I have a new idea I’m milling about in my head, which is going to be more street/architectural. But due to the area of town I need to be more subtle with my camera. And as such I spent some time today trying out an old Twin Lens reflex camera, and aside from how to line up the 120 film inside to shoot the whole roll properly (THERE IS SO MUCH PAPER ON EITHER SIDE) it went well! Processed the...

I spent Thursday in the studio with a fantastic model friend of mine (Chloe) continuing the work on my beauty series. With the help of an awesome makeup artist, and my assistant Alison (who tragically is leaving at the end of the month to go back home to Ontario) I think I managed to get some really great shots. We slowed down tremendously and really fine tuned all the lighting for each pose. I...

The Contact Sheet
The second of my book reviews, The Contact Sheet by Steve Crist is a study in to individual shoots by some of photography’s biggest names and some more unknown yet equally talented names (or maybe they’re just unknown to me because I don’t pay as much attention to documentary photography as I could). Crist lays out for us the contact sheet (or a selection of images from the...

Movies!!!
Before I became a photographer I had studied cinematography and worked on a few short films and music videos. However ultimately Photography suited me better, the pursuit of story telling through single images is the medium for me.
A few weeks ago I was reading another photographer’s blog and she had a post about the movies that inspired her visually. This struck a chord with me because a...

Going Behind-the-Scenes
Monday was finally the first day I attended a photo shoot and it was for the Sad Mag comedy editorial! This specific shoot revolved around the various classic action hero poses. I’m talking about the traditional roof-top, wind-blowing stances that you would see out of Marvel comic books. These two comedians couldn’t have modelled better for it!
I started by helping set up the studio....

Call Me "The Intern"
My name is Aneta Michniak and I’ve recently started an internship with Alex Waber Photography.
I started off with a basic pocket-sized camera and took pictures of almost anything. Unsure of what I was doing I soon realized how much I enjoyed this simple exercise because I was able to express my imagination. Throughout time I taught myself how to use more complex cameras and this eventually led me...

The Sad Mag Comedy Shoot
I was recently asked by a local Vancouver art and culture quarterly called Sad Mag to help out with an editorial about the thriving comedy scene we have here in our city. The brief I was given was to produce 7 images of different groupings of comedians, each group has been given a different archetype to portray based on their style of comedy and role in the community; characters such as the...

SWARM13: Sept 7th
SWARM is an annual event during which a bunch of galleries in Vancouver have an opening on the same night resulting in an amazing and exciting environment to view art. This year my studio and the whole building I’m in are opening our doors to the public and exhibiting the amazing wealth of talent hidden behind our walls!
Right now I’m madly editing away at a small collection of photos...
