I’ve been shooting model test shots a lot lately for a local Vancouver agency. Its a lot of fun, primarily because I get to practice and test new ideas in lighting, posing and set dressing. This shot is pretty simple in the grand scheme of things, but I like it.

This was a kind of funny situation, still with Beth letting my play with lights, the first shot with crazy colours was what I was going for, the second shot returns to my usual simplicity simply because the strobes hadn’t recharged in time. Can’t decide which I prefer! Thoughts?

I shot a new self portrait recently. Something more formal that I can use for business stuff. Let me know what you think!

I’ve recently been working on a new collection, hopefully for an exhibition, which are figure studies with poses taken from classical stories and mythologies. It’s been a lot of fun thus far, not only researching, but developing a super minimal lighting style to match. This is one of the test shots (one of my favourites), and I definitely still have a lot of work to do to really make the images pop. (This is also just a photo of the negative against a slightly diffused window which is where the lines come from). The next step will be fine tuning the lighting for maximum minimalism, and from there its in to the darkroom to start producing prints.

Another from the recent shoot with Vancouver clothing boutique Devil May Wear to shoot an editorial for them. We gathered as many antiques as possible and spent a day in the studio letting our imaginations run wild. I’m very happy with the shots we got.
(I think this one is my favourite)

I’m doing a series of movement studies at the moment. Capturing the way people express themselves through movement. Different people from different backgrounds (dance, yoga, gymnast, desk job, act). have different ways of physically communicating and expressing both themselves and ideas and though this collection I’m hoping to capture these different ways of expressing ones self.
These photos, amusingly, are almost the complete opposite of the rest of the studies and a bit more abstract that the rest as well, but I find, quite beautiful. These came about from one of my original ideas for the collection. I ultimately decided against this style in favour of a somewhat more straight on approach where it is less about the photo itself and more about the subject. The project is definitely still in its infancy as I try to figure out just how I want to photograph the subjects, and then what I want them to express. I’ll hopefully have something to show from these later stages some time soon.
The awesome Model/dancer in these pictures is Jee Lam.
